This blog is about the use of Literature Circle. I think there is limited information on this blog and not enough pictures.

This is a short video about using technology to enhance learning in the classroom. I do exactly the same in my room and have found that it seems to engage my students better than using the chalkboard.

Oh! Look what Josh just taught me. Now I know how to make hyperlinks. The magic of the right click (or 'control click' on a Mac.)

Get Lost

http://guysread.typepad.com/getlost

This could be a great source of both anecdotal and factual information for social science/world studies. The information can be navigated by country, or by subtopic (history, food, people, transportation, etc). The blog is augmented with a podcast.

This blog integrates pictures, embedded videos as well as youtube linked videos.

I went to the Connections to Literacy link. I agreed with the information on this particular. It states that while teaching subject material it is important to engage students in viewing, talking, representing, etc. Many learning styles should be utilized in a lesson to ensure a rich understanding for students.

English Language Learners

This section was very small. It begins with a quote from the Ontario Curriculum document which states that all second language learners should have the opportunity to develop confidence using technology and that software provides helpful support for all subject areas. It them has a short paragraph on electronic dictionaries and translation programs.

It think it is important for all students to be exposed to technology especially second language learners. I wonder about using translators (I have mixed feelings about these: on one hand I think they create confidence and a sense of understanding but on the other hand they can't take into consideration the nuances of the language and what about over-reliance).

Planning and Organizing

When planning activities, it's very important to consider equal access to technology- not all students may have computers or technology readily available to them.

Literacy Implications

Reading- OSAPAC has software appropriate to all levels of learning. E-books, internet sites and LCD projectors allow all students a chance to view and critically analyze material.

Writing- Technology allows for students to compose, revise and edit material much more easily and quickly than ever before.

From the lesson plans, it appears that students must be familiar with Smart ideas.

Is this important? Why?

Student groupings are important for learning –

- Do you agree or disagree? Why?
Yes, I agree. Collaboration is an important skill and helps learning

Comment on
e-workshop:
Student groupings
- What is your opinion?
The resource says:
"While many students like learning new instructional technologies on their own, research points to the many benefits to be realized from learning and using technology in pairs or small groups. Junior students learn in new ways while interacting with others. "

I agree with this – I find that in using technology collaboration is very important. It focuses kids and supports constructivist, layered learning.

"Graphic Organizers"

GOs are important, of course. They are visual organizers and summarizers. Many ideas we want to record are not linear.

I sometimes find teaching how to use GOs takes a good deal of time, before students are able to use them independently, let alone make their own. But it is time well spent.

It might be a good exercise for a group of teachers to select a GO form they want to use/teach (e.g. fishbone), and then find a suitable text to go with it. Maybe create a set to be used for teaching the various GO forms.

Assisted technology

This article is a very intereting read. It demonstrates or shows how educators can use various forms of assisted technology ( example ( wordprocessing spell checking, graph and chart insertion, and cut and paste) to increase the likelihood that all students, particulary those with special needs will experience success both in the classroom and in life

Please select Tools and Resources
There will be three choices for you. 1. How do I arrange access to availble Technology. 2. How can I plan and assess technology related learning. 3. Which tools and multimedia resources support literacy learning.

I read about integrating technology into the classroom.
- Is this important? Why?
It is important to integrate technology into the classroom because students are using this technology outside of the classroom. This type of instruction has many benefits for all types of learners.
This link had many ideas about preparing junior students before you even take them to the lab (internet safety, evaluating and navigating web sites, saving work, etc.). There were also ideas about teaching students to use the hardware by modelling for them in the lab, and even having model for each other in the lab. The later part of this link suggested review sessions after the students left the lab, and they also have some assessment ideas. Review, reflection and assessment are definitely necessary before students move on to something more complex or new.
